Grain Automate is a national research, development and extension initiative of the Grains Research and Development Corporation. It seeks to accelerate the development, validation and adoption of machine automation, autonomy and intelligent systems, across a range of form factors, including machinery, implements, UAVs and digital systems, that deliver measurable value to Australian grain growers. The initiative is largely focused within the farm gate, while recognising relevant connections with logistics, suppliers and post-farm-gate systems. The initiative complements existing investment in precision agriculture, digital agronomy and advanced analytics. It recognises that grower value will be created through a combination of industry readiness, targeted technology development, integration across physical and digital systems, and step-change improvements in precision. This call builds on the approach of the Grain Automate Program.

A second season of data collection and validation is now required to test whether these relationships are repeatable across different seasonal conditions and a broader range of environments. Repeating the work at similar location types, with the same varieties and nitrogen structure, would help better define environmental thresholds for efficient biomass conversion and assess the value of drone-derived imagery in supporting interpretation of yield stability and grain realisation. This validation series will leverage existing trials, including DPIRD Trials: 1. Low rainfall (Tarin Rock): 4 N rates, 1 TOS, 3 varieties (48 plots) 2. Medium rainfall (Narrogin): 4 N rates, 1 TOS, 3 varieties (48 plots) 3. High rainfall (West Dale): 4 N rates, 2 TOS, 3 varieties (96 plots) | 19 Oct 2026 | 126,000 |

The 2025 workshops were contracted as a one-year pilot due to the development of a national seeder setup workshop investment (PROC-9177302). This investment is currently under negotiation and will not have capacity to commence seeder setup workshops until 2027. This one-year NGN investment seeks to fill the gap and continue the momentum created with the 2025 seeder setup workshops.
