PROC-9177500: Optimising agronomy of irrigated crops to enhance profit per megalitre of water

Grains Research and Development Corporation · Ref PROC-9177500 · Australia (Commonwealth)

Request for Tender · Published 30 September 2026 · Value not stated

The work will synthesise evidence from previous GRDC irrigated agriculture investments and assess priority opportunities to improve profitability from irrigated cropping systems, with a focus on maximising profit per megalitre of irrigation water rather than yield or water-use efficiency alone. The analysis must consider the agronomic and economic drivers that influence irrigated crop decisions, including water availability, water price, input costs, seasonal conditions, crop potential, crop end use, rotations, and whole-farm water allocation. It must also assess how irrigation delivery systems and practices, including surface or furrow and pressurised sprinkler systems, interact with soil physical constraints and crop management factors to influence crop performance, input efficiency and profit per megalitre.

For this procurement, irrigated crops primarily refers to grain crops within GRDC’s remit. The analysis should also consider how these crops compete with, complement or interact with other irrigated enterprises, including rice, cotton, forages and mixed farming systems, where relevant to whole-farm water allocation and opportunity costs.

The successful tenderer will be required to review existing irrigation and crop decision-support tools, identify whether they are meeting grower needs, and assess whether practical economic tools or decision frameworks are required to support more confident and timely irrigation research investment decisions across winter and summer cropping scenarios.

The final output will be a clear, evidence-based report that identifies priority research gaps, high-leverage agronomic opportunities, and practical recommendations to guide future GRDC investment in irrigated agronomy at national and regional scales.

Summary of the published description

The procurement seeks to synthesise evidence from previous GRDC irrigated agriculture investments and assess priority opportunities to improve profitability from irrigated cropping systems, focusing on maximising profit per megalitre of irrigation water. The work requires analysing agronomic and economic drivers, irrigation delivery systems, soil constraints, and interactions with other irrigated enterprises, as well as reviewing existing decision-support tools. The final deliverable is an evidence-based report that identifies priority research gaps, high-leverage agronomic opportunities, and practical recommendations to guide future GRDC investments.Show more

A second season of data collection and validation is now required to test whether these relationships are repeatable across different seasonal conditions and a broader range of environments. Repeating the work at similar location types, with the same varieties and nitrogen structure, would help better define environmental thresholds for efficient biomass conversion and assess the value of drone-derived imagery in supporting interpretation of yield stability and grain realisation. This validation series will leverage existing trials, including DPIRD Trials:   1. Low rainfall (Tarin Rock): 4 N rates, 1 TOS, 3 varieties (48 plots)  2. Medium rainfall (Narrogin): 4 N rates, 1 TOS, 3 varieties (48 plots)  3. High rainfall (West Dale): 4 N rates, 2 TOS, 3 varieties (96 plots)

The 2025 workshops were contracted as a one-year pilot due to the development of a national seeder setup workshop investment (PROC-9177302). This investment is currently under negotiation and will not have capacity to commence seeder setup workshops until 2027.  This one-year NGN investment seeks to fill the gap and continue the momentum created with the 2025 seeder setup workshops.
